Abstract
867,091. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H. Aug. 16, 1957 [Jan. 4, 1957], No. 499/57. Class 69 (2). A coupling whose pump 1 is rigid with a casing 2 extending over both elements, has its pump 1 with greater internal diameter than its turbine 3. The space between the inner limit 4 of the pump working space and the shaft 7 consists of an open-ended chamber 5 and a storage chamber 12 which together do not extend axially beyond the rotating casing 2. When the coupling is stationary, liquid collects in chamber 12 flowing under gravity through ports 13, so that when the pump 1 starts, the low torque enables it to accelerate quickly, liquid then being centrifugally ejected from the chamber 12. When the turbine speed drops (e.g. if it is stalled) liquid flows into space 5 and so reduces torque. A filling duct 16, designed so that the coupling can be filled to within the desirable limits, is provided. A fusible plug 17 is provided to release the excessive volume of liquid caused by expansion of liquid owing to rise in temperature. Specifications 692,286, 719,544 and 867,092 are referred to.
