Abstract

1,146,840. Hydraulic couplings. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 2 Aug., 1966 [5 Aug., 1965], No. 34629/66. Heading F2C. In an hydraulic coupling the inner ends of the radial vanes 14 of the pump element are connected to an axially tapered deflector ring 21, an annular gap 24 being formed between the ring and the interior of the pump casing 10. At low speeds, as at starting, the bulk of the working fluid occupies an interior compartment 22 so that the torque transmitted is low, but as speed increases the ring 21 acts to promote outward flow of fluid through the gap 24 into the working circuit. The width of the gap 24 should not exceed half that of the ring 21. As shown, the ring 21 is of trapezoidal section, but other tapered forms are described, together with arrangements in which the ring is combined with internal webs.
