Abstract

863,206. Hydraulic couplings. ROBSON, C. Dec. 30, 1959, No. 44284/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic coupling comprises an air passage space 25 between a casing 24 and a reservoir 3 which rotates with the coupling and has an end wall 21 remote therefrom, a plurality of heat-dissipating fins 28, 29 mounted on the outer surface of the reservoir and projecting into the air passage, and means 22 directing the fluid circulation flow within the reservoir along a centrifugally created path 23 across the minor surface of the portion of the reservoir upon which the fins are mounted. The wall 2 of the reservoir is secured to the impeller 5 of the coupling, the turbine 6 of which is secured to an output shaft 8 rotatably mounted in a stationary sleeve 9. The end wall 21 of the reservoir is located on a bearing 10 on the sleeve and on its outer surface carries the fins 28 which are inclined so as to draw air through a plurality of holes 26 into the air passage 25, the air then passing over a second plurality of inclined fins 29 on the wall 2 to air outlets 27. The filling of the coupling and reservoir is controlled by scoop tubes 14, 15 which are adjustable by means of levers 18, 19. The fluid from the scoop tube 15 passes through a passage 20 and is discharged adjacent the end wall of the reservoir, the fluid then being maintained in close proximity to the wall by a dished plate 22 mounted on the sleeve 9 or reservoir. The outward flow of fluid under centrifugal force is retarded by a plurality of holes 34 in the plate 22. In an alternative embodiment, the centrifugal flow of fluid across the end wall is retarded by a number of baffle plates 30, Fig. 3, whereby pockets of fluid are formed, the plates having a plurality of small orifices 32 to permit flow from one plate to the next.
