Heat-insulating materials and articles comprise a pliable sheet material backed by a heatinsulating layer which consists of a plurality of thicknesses of a cellular, foamed, resilient material superposed loosely on one another and connected to one another only at spaced intervals, e.g. by stitching, so as to form air pockets between the thicknesses of the foamed material. As shown, a top fabric 1 and lining material 3, backed with layers of cellular, foamed, resilient material 4, 5 of the same or different porosity, are connected by quilting stitches 6. A layer of foamed plastic material with coarser pores may be interposed between layers 4 and 5. The layers 4, 5 and, if present, the intervening layer, may be quilted together by themselves, without the fabrics 1 and 3, to form a lining which may be secured to a garment by stitching, buttoning, slide fasteners or press-studs. The pliable sheet material may be fabric, plastic sheeting, or fabrics impregnated or coated with plasticized polyvinyl chloride. The cellular, foamed, resilient material may be sponge rubber or foamed polyurethane. Layers of filter paper, heat-reflecting metal foil or metallized fabric may be inserted between the other layers, while the top fabric may be metallized or coated with metal foil.
