Abstract

864,623. Spray-producers. STEWARTWARNER CORPORATION. June 18, 1958 [June 25, 1957], No. 19533/58. Class 69 (3). An aerosol generator includes a reservoir 3 for liquid, e.g. oil, to which a head 1 is attached having an air inlet 11 and an aerosol outlet 12. A by-pass passage 13 interconnects inlet and outlet 11 and 12 and, when the air inlet pressure is below a predetermined value, is closed by a spring-urged ball 14. A disc 7 separates an aerosol chamber 9 from the reservoir interior. A bore 18 extending laterally from the inlet 11 receives the front end of a liquid nozzle 43, and a Venturi is provided between the nozzle and bore so that the flow of air through the bore causes oil to be drawn up from the reservoir and delivered from the nozzle and formed into an aerosol. The aerosol passes into the chamber 9 before leaving the outlet 12 via an aperture 20. The oil is drawn up a tube 22 via a filter 44 and flows past a ball 28 and upwardly through a passage 37 and then down passages 39, 40 to a chamber 41 and the nozzle 43. The oil flow may be reduced by a needle valve 74 which may open a bore 72 to allow the inflow of aerosol to the chamber 41. The opening in the disc 7 through which the tube 22 passes is sealed by a spring- urged sealing ring 25. In order to fill the reservoir without interrupting the air flow a spring- urged hollow sleeve 51 is slidably arranged in the head, and is normally urged downwardly by a threaded closure plug 64 to keep open the aperture 48 and to allow the outlet pressure to be applied to the oil in the reservoir. To fill the reservoir the plug is removed whereupon the sleeve is urged upwardly and the aperture 48 closed by a sealing ring 60; liquid is then fed through the sleeve to the reservoir.
