In a bearing comprising an outer race 2 and rollers 7 bearing directly on a shaft 8, the clearance is adjustable by means of a ring 3 of deformable material located between the outer race 2 and housing 4 and compressed axially by rings 5, the compression causing reduction of the race diameter. In a modification, a ring 27 of deformable material is located between split lateral rims 31, 32 of a race 22, Fig. 4. Axial pressure applied by a flange 32 causes bending of the race 22 in addition to deformation produced by compression of the ring 27. In another modification, shown in Fig. 5, deformable rings 34 are located in circumferential grooves in the outer surface of a race 33. In a further modification, a race 39, Fig. 6, provided with a recess 40 which accommodates an elasticallydeformable ring 41, is introduced under pressure into a housing 43 so that a cambered raceway is formed. By tightening a nut 46, the camber is reduced and hence the clearance increased. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which a race 47 is constructed as an elastic element which may be deformed by axial adjustment of a threaded nut 53, elastically deformable rings being inserted in outer recesses 48 of the race 47. In another modification, shown in Fig. 3, a plastic ring 15, located in a groove in a race 14, is compressed by a threaded ring 18 acting on a ring 17 carrying pins 16<SP>1</SP> which pass through apertures in the end wall of the race 14. The invention may be applied to an inner race.
