Abstract

1,235,791. Making bearings. SKF KUGELLAGERFABRIKEN G.m.b.H. 3 March, 1969 [2 March, 1968], No. 11291/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A race ring of a bearing has, prior to the bearing being mounted in place, in the case of an inner race ring, a non-circular mating surface 1 and a non-circular race surface 2 and the surfaces 1, 2 are so dimensioned that the ring is distorted, within its elastic limit when mounted on a shaft so that the race surface becomes a circular surface 5. Alternatively with an outer race ring the ring is mounted in the bore (8) of a housing and the inner diameter of the ring is distorted to a circular surface (10), Fig. 2 (not shown). The inner race ring is initially formed with a bore 1 of tri-lobed non-re-entrant shape and pushed on to a mandrel having a diameter equal to that of a shaft 3. The surface 2 is ground circular and the ring removed from the mandrel, the size of the ring being such that it is elastically deformed when placed on the mandrel. When making an outer race ring, a non-circular ring is clamped in a bore or chuck, the diameters of which correspond to the bore of the intended housing of the ring. The inner race surface is then ground circular and again there is only elastic deformation of the ring. In alternative methods the non-circular surfaces are oval.
