Abstract
861,088. Universal joints. MORGAN, H. R. June 12, 1959 [March 17, 1958], No. 8410/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A universal joint of the Hooke's type having a central cross-shaped spider pivoted to two shafts has also bearing means between the spider and one of the two connected shafts to permit relative axial movement. In one form, a shaft 1, Figs. 1, 2, 3, carries at its end a fork 2 within which are pivoted by needle roller bearings 3 two trunnions 4A of a central crossshaped spider 4 having another pair of trunnions 5 at right-angles thereto journalled by needle roller bearings 6 in slipper blocks 7 which are enabled to slide axially relatively to a surrounding housing 9, fast with a shaft 13, by roller bearings 10 disposed between the slipper blocks and race-ways 8B in channels formed in the housing. Under load, the rollers 10 at one side only of each slipper block 7 transmit torque between the shafts 1, 13, so that the rollers on the other side are relatively free, the rollers re-circulating during relative axial movement of the shafts and being retained in position by guides 11 at the ends of the races 8B. The housing 9 is closed by a bellows 15 which may be of aluminium. In the form shown, a double row of rollers 10 is used. In one modification, Figs. 4 ... 7 (not shown), two rows of rollers are again used, but are separated by a central ridge on the slipper blocks 7 and engage inside channel-shaped races inserted into the housing, which is made from two equal parts welded together along axial lines. In another form, a single row 10, Fig. 9, of barrel-shaped rollers 10 lies between each side of the slipper blocks 7 and the housing 9A, which has channels of frusto-cylindrical cross-section co-operating therewith. The housing 9A is made from two equal parts welded together along axial lines 18. Alternatively, Fig. 10 (not shown), the weld connections may be along the outermost portions of the blockreceiving channels. As a further modification, balls may be used instead of rollers.
