Abstract

859,909. Motor vehicle power steering. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 37096/59. Addition to 834, 761. Class 79(5). The motor vehicle power steering mechanism of the parent Specification in which a manually rotatable steering member 70 is connected to one end of a torsion bar spring 78 and also to one of two relatively movable control valve elements 90, 94, which direct fluid under pressure to a servomotor, and the other end of the torsion bar spring and the other control valve element are connected to a screw shaft 56 carrying a nut has the servomotor 20 connected as part of the steering linkage between the nut and dirigible wheels 14. The nut has rack teeth in mesh with a sector gear connected by a rock shaft to a pitman arm 64 which is further connected by an element 30 to the cylinder of the servomotor. Both the element 30 and a second element 28 have ball-and-socket connections with the tie-rods 10, 12 of the steering linkage while the piston of the servomotor is connected to the frame 32 of the vehicle by a shaft 26. The cylinder of the servomotor consists of a pair of concentric tubes forming an annular passage in communication with the shaft side of the piston, the annular passage and a passage in communication with the opposite side of the piston being connected through the valve elements to a pump 50 and a reservoir 54. The torsion bar 78 begins to twist immediately steering effort is imposed to cause rotary movement of the element 90 with respect to the element 94 to allow pressure fluid to operate the servomotor. The torsion bar may have a rate of 9 pound inches per degree of deflection.
