Abstract

1,022,029. Power assisted steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. Feb. 20, 1964 [June 5, 1963], No. 22313/63. Heading B7H. A power assisted rack-and-pinion steering gear comprises a steering shaft 5 connected with pinion 6 through resilient torsion bar 7, twisting of which actuates rotary servo valve 8 controlling the supply of pressure hydraulic fluid to the two sides of annular power piston 13 slidable in annular space 14 between cylinders 11, 12 which form a rigid extension of the control valve housing. A spring loaded slipper 9 (Fig. 2, not shown) maintains the radial engagement between pinion teeth 4A and rack teeth 1A, limited movement of rack 1 relative to piston 13 being permitted by pin 13B connecting the right-hand ends of the rack and piston.
