Abstract
859,146. Hydraulic transmission of power. BROCKHOUSE ENGINEERING Ltd. April 8, 1958 [April 18, 1957], No. 12650/57. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic torque converter comprising impeller elements 11a, 12a, turbine elements 11b, 12b and reaction elements 11c, 12c, has an automatically controlled cooling system. Liquid flows from points 25 of the torque converter working chambers via hollow shaft 17 and piston valve 30 to cooler 34 and thence to reservoir 10. Pump 14, geared to the input shaft 13, returns the liquid through lines 38, 41 to the working chambers. Piston valve 30 is spring urged to close the passage through shaft 17 ; at low torques the pressure in lines 38, 40 from pump 14 keeps the valve 30 open. At high torques, the pressure in the working chambers rises, resulting in greater flow of liquid from points 25 to the cooler; when the pressure in the working chambers falls as a result, reduction in pressure on face 47 of valve 30 causes it partially to block shaft 17 and throttle the flow through the cooler so that the torque converter is maintained full.
