Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A cooling fan 11 is driven from shaft 18 through a conical clutch 16, 14, which is held engaged by springs 40 and is disengaged by hydraulic pressure supplied through pipe 34 under the control of an engine temperature responsive thermostat 52. The fan and clutch part 14 are carried by an axially movable sleeve 28 formed with a flange 30 forming a piston moved against springs 40 by the hydraulic pressure, which may be the lubricating oil pressure. Valve 54 controlled by thermostat 52 is opened at low engine temperature to admit the hydraulic fluid to pipe 34 and disengage the clutch.
