[Also in Group XIII] A cooling tower comprises a casing 10 supported off the ground on piers 14 a bottom water collecting trough 20 with a central opening in which there is a fan 16 a foraminous distributing tray 40 at the top of the casing having air discharge openings 34, 36 on either side and packing 44, 46, members of which are horizontally offset so that the whole of the packing is inclined to the vertical as shown and. induces a cross flow of air as indicated by the arrows. Louvres 54, 56 and eliminators 58, 60 help to produce the flow of air.
