Abstract

A solid detergent composition in chip, flake, bar or cake form comprises (a) a mixture of one or more potassium alkyl sulphates derived from fatty alcohols containing at least 10 carbon atoms, suitably those obtained from hydrogenated coconut oil, and (b) as plasticizer, one or more primary fatty alcohols having more than 16 carbon atoms and a melting point above 40 DEG C., preferably those containing 16-18 carbon atoms. In a modification, the plasticizer may be a partial fatty acid ester of a polyol, e.g. glycerol mono- and di-stearates, an ester of a hydroxylated fatty acid, e.g. hydrogenated castor oil, or a condensate of a fatty alcohol and an alkylene oxide, e.g. the condensate of 1 mole of fatty alcohol with 1 mole ethylene oxide, such a plasticizer having a molecular weight above 200 and a melting point about 40 DEG C. In all cases, the plasticizer is generally present in amounts by weight of 10-50% of the potassium alkyl sulphate, and preferably has a melting point above 55 DEG C. In addition, the composition may include soap, sodium or magnesium alkyl sulphate, or mixtures thereof as solubilizers in amounts of 20-30% by weight of the potassium alkyl sulphate. The compositions are prepared by homogenizing the ingredients while warm, and then drying on heating rolls, in a drying oven, by infra-red rays, or under vacuum. When dried, the flakes or chips obtained may be extruded to obtain bars.
