Abstract
857,826. Root-crop harvesters. VAN DER LELY, C. July 1, 1957 [July 9, 1956], No: 20708/57. Class 6(3). A root-crop digging machine comprises a wheeled frame carrying a series of transverse rotary bars 24-31, & 41-48, arranged in two banks so that the bars slope downwardly towards their free ends. The bars are of non- circular section and are of differing diameters, the smallest-diameter bars being at the front, The bars may be covered with resilient material to avoid damage to the crop which is passed upwards to a series of interengaging rotary helices 32, 49, the helices being also arranged transversely in two banks in V-form. The crop is finally cleaned and transported laterally by a pair of oppositely rotating horizontal helices 72, 73 surmounted by fixed grids 74, 75. The rotary rods and helices are driven from the ground-wheels 10, 11 by gearing 37, 53, 80. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the two banks of inclined helices are replaced by horizontal helices rotating on parallel axes, alternate helices being waisted and bulged along their length.
