Abstract

A tractor-mounted bean harvester for gathering bean pods from two rows C having a framework comprising a base 33, vertical support members 116, 121 and a cross beam 32 connecting the members 121, comprises two rotatable tined combing reels 119, mounted longitudinally of the harvester, an endless conveyer 61 and longitudinally disposed rotatable brushes 135. In operation the bean bushes are introduced to the combing reels via gathering aprons 160 which are pivoted about shafts 178 and are supported on skids 200. The aprons also include gathering chains 181 provided with knobs 185 and the chains are driven at a speed equal to that of the tractor. During the combing operation the bean bushes are supported by concave base members 154, and the brushes are rotated as shown in Fig. 8 to brush from the tines any pods adhering thereto. The gathered bean pods and any leaves &c. are carried by the slatted conveyer 61 via an elevator housing 25 to a winnowing and bagging mechanism (not shown). Each reel comprises forward cylindrical portion and a rearward truncated conical portion, and spring coiled tines 129 bolted to L-shaped bars 123. The reels also include longitudinal rods 132 bolted by means of bars 133 to the bars 123 (Fig. 10, not shown), on the leading sides of the tines, such that during combing the bean bushes do not become fouled in the spring coils 128. The reels, brushes and gathering chains are driven from the tractor power take-off via sprockets 28, 111 and 109 and chains 27 and 110. The reel shafts 114 are driven as indicated in Fig. 3 from across shaft 108 and shafts 194 are driven from the reel shafts as are the brushes (see Fig. 1). Chains 192 driven by shafts 194 drive through shafts 178 and bevel gearing 186, 188 the gathering chains 181. The height of the harvester may be adjusted via hydraulically operated levers 13, 14 connected respectively by a chain 21 and by rods 44, 50 and a plate 45 to the rear and forward ends of the harvester frame.
