Abstract

The invention comprises copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc compounds of disazo dyes of formula: <FORM:0857584/IV (c)/1> wherein the nucleus "a" may be substituted by one or two methyl groups or a carboxylic acid group, the nucleus "b" may be substituted by one or two methyl groups and Z is hydrogen or a sulphonic acid group. The metal compounds are prepared by reacting a copper, nickel, cobalt or zinc salt with a disazo dye obtained by diazotising an appropriate 4- amino -1 : 11- azobenzene and coupling with a 1-(mono- or disurphophenyl) -5- pyrazolone -3- carboxylic acid. The metal compounds are soluble in organic solvents and are used to colour lacquers, polymers, wood stains and celluloid in orange and red shades. In examples the disazo dyes 4- amino-1 :11- azobenzene --> 1-(21- sulphophenyl or 21 : 51- disulphophenyl) -5- pyrazolone -3-carboxylic acid, 4- amino -1 : 11- azobenzene -4-carboxylic acid --> 1-(21- sulphophenyl) -5- pyrazolone -3- carboxylic acid, 4- amino -3 : 21-dimethyl -1 : 11- azobenzene --> 1-(21- sulpho- or 2 : 51- disulphophenyl) -5- pyrazolone -3-carboxylic acid and 4- amino -2 : 5 : 21 : 41-tetramethyl -1 : 11- azobenzene --> 1-(21- sulphophenyl) -5- pyrazolone -3- carboxylic acid are reacted with copper sulphate or acetate, cobalt chloride, nickel sulphate or zinc chloride or with a mixture of copper sulphate and dicyclohexylamine sulphate.
