Class 64(2) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A thermal element 96 actuating a flap valve 75 in a filter (see Group XXVIII) comprises a casing 97 containing a rubber member 104 surrounded by heat-responsive wax-like material 121 and having an axial dead space 105 into which projects the pointed end 109a of a valve actuating rod 109. Thermal expansion of the material 121 squeezes the rubber member 104 so as to reduce the dead space 105 and force the rod 109 outwardly against a valve return spring 123. In the event of the rod 109 being in its limiting outward position further expansion of the material 121 is accomodated by displacement of the element 96 against a spring 99.
