879,772. Temperature-responsive actuating-elements. VERNET, S. Jan. 10, 1958, No. 1036/58. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXIX] When wax or paradibromobenzene 3 in a casing 6 expands with temperature rise, it pushes out a piston 8 by acting through a diaphragm 4 which may be cupped as shown or flat with a thickened central portion, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown), and through a preformed elastic plug 5 in a bore with at least two tapered portions 13, 14. There is a disc 24 between the plug 5 and piston 8. It is of lowfriction material such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene, polyadipamide, polyvinyl chloride acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polymethylene, a chlorinated polyether, or acrolonitrile resin. The elastic plug 5 has a slightly larger diameter than the bore in which it is located and is formed (Fig. 2, not shown), with but one tapered portion, i.e. corresponding to the tapered bore 13. A spring mechanism returns the piston 8 when the temperature falls. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 629,158.
