Abstract
597,901. Linear - dimension gauges. BOWERS, E., and BOWERS, G. May 22, 1945, No. 12741. [Class 106 (ii)] An internal micrometer gauge comprises an axially movable plunger element controlled by a micrometer adjusting thimble to operate anvils normally contacting one another at their inner ends, said plunger having a tapered nose to thrust them outwardly. The gauge has a graduated barrel 1, an axially movable spindle 2 and a hollow body 5 within which a plunger element 6 is mounted to slide freely under the control of the spindle 2. The plunger is tapered to form flats or a conical nose 8 to contact inclines or other shaped surfaces on the upper inner faces of two or more measuring anvils 10. The outer ends of the anvils are formed with a shoulder 16 so that they may be held in a retracted position by resilient means such as spring arms 14 of a spring ring 15. Different types of anvils may be employed to suit the form of internal diameter to be measured. To facilitate measurements at a given distance within a hole, a locating device 18 is mounted on the body.
