A machine for trueing carding cylinders and for sharpening their linings comprises a grinding wheel 5, Fig. 2, mounted with its drive-motor 40 on a carriage 3 adapted for longitudinal reciprocatory movement over a bed 2 which is shiftable laterally towards the axis of the carding cylinder under the action of a single control member associated with independent means, preferably of the micrometric type, for adjustment of the parallelism between the bed and the cylinder axis. The grinding wheel 5 and motor 4 are carried on pivotally-adjustable arms 27, Fig. 3, on the carriage 3 which is reciprocable longitudinally on dovetailed ways on the bed 2 by a worm 9 belt-driven from a motor 11, change of direction at the end of each stroke being effected by an electrical contact controlled by stops 31. The bed is laterally movable to and from the carding cylinder on transverse guides on a stationary bed 1, which is shaped to fit over the frame of the carding machine, by means of nuts 37, Fig. 8, secured to the bed 2, and threaded shafts 32, which are adjustably connected to supports 23 fixed to the bed 1 and rotated by a handwheel-operated shaft 16 through gears 18, 19. Parallelism between the longitudinal movement of the carriage and the axis of the cylinder is obtained by moving the bed 2 by axially adjusting the shafts 32 which are rotatable in sleeves 36 provided with an external micrometric thread and axially secured to the shafts by nuts 33. The sleeves are adjustably secured to the supports 23 by control nuts 34 ,35, the slackening of one and tightening of the other moving the shaft 32 and bed 2. Backlash between the shafts 32 and nuts 37 is eliminated by nuts 40 which are adjustably connected to the nuts 37 by screws 39. Dust from the grinding wheel is collected in a hood 6, Fig. 2, and sucked through the motor 4 or a device 7 connected to a dust-bag 8 or filter.
