[Also in Group XXIII] An abrasive or polishing element comprises a flexible backing element 10 to which is attached a series of generally parallel elongated abrading or polishing members 11 each formed with an abrasive or hard polishing surface. The flexible element may be a woven textile fabric, of rubber, synthetic rubber, a flexible synthetic resin, or elastorner. The elongated members may be closely packed and in close contact with one another along their full length (Figs. 1 and 2) or may be spaced from one another over at least parts of their lengths (Fig. 3), and may be attached to the backing element along their full lengths. The backing element may be perforated or slotted 13 to allow swarf to pass through gaps 12 between the elongated members and through the backing element. The elongated members may be provided on both opposite faces of the flexible backing element which may be a thin sheet 15, and the members 16 on one face may be arranged parallel to one another in a direction inclined to or at right angles with the elongated members 17 on the opposite face. The elongated members may be metal wire which may have a series of small serrations or notches 14 longitudinally spaced along the length of the wire, a sharp-edged spiral rib, an abrasive coating, or a smooth surface.
