Abstract
854,937. Driving magnetic recording tapes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 30, 1958 [Aug. 21, 1957], No. 40361/57. Divided out of 854,936. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XVI] Web driving means for driving magnetic tapes comprises a roller having a series of apertures around the periphery thereof affording air passages which communicate with the interior of the roller, mounting means, whereby the roller is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis, a relatively port arranged to communicate with the interior of the roller, and a collar having at least one duct therein which is adapted to couple the interior of the roller with the stationary port during rotation of the roller, the collar being capable of limited movement transversely relatively to the axis of rotation of the roller to enable the collar to adjust its position with respect to the roller. The roller 44, Fig. 4, carried on a shaft 45, has a stationary collar 70 surrounding a portion 48. A boss 71 has a stationary port 75 communicating with duct 74 in the collar 70 communicating with bores 54 in the portion 48. The roller periphery has slots 53. In a modification. Fig. 5, the collar 70 rotates with the roller 44 and has longitudinal bores 50 connecting a bore 77 in the roller 44 with a stationary port 74 in the boss 71. A spring 80 presses the roller 70 upwardly into engagement with the roller 44. In a further modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the collar 70 can rotate relatively to the roller 44 and has a right-angled duct 74 communicating with an arcuate opening 81 in the boss 71. For driving a plurality of webs, e.g. magnetic tapes, a multiple roller 82, Fig. 9 (not shown), has spacing rings 86, one of which is driven by a belt 88, further rings 89 provided with peripheral slots 91 for engagement with the webs, and spring-pressed collar 93. In a further modification, the collar may comprise a series of rings 57 to 60, Fig. 1 (not shown), as described in Specification 854,936.
