Abstract
A metal member, submitted in service to stress and strain at elevated temperatures, is subjected to a treatment consisting of securing the member to a rigid body having a higher co-efficient of expansion than the member, heating the assembly to a temperature at or above that to which the member will be subjected, continuing the heating to produce a plastic deformation in the member and then cooling. A ferritic steel bolt or rod may be secured in a block of austenitic steel, the cross-sectional area of which is large compared with the rod or bolt, and the assembly heated, the difference in co-efficients of expansion producing a plastic deformation in the rod or bolt. If the bolts are difficult to remove from the block their length may be temporarily increased by passing an electric current therethrough without heating the block.
