Abstract

Ferritic or semiferritic cast iron is surface hardened by heating the surface, with an oxyacetylene flame or by induction, to dissolve free carbon and form a pearlitic structure, the heating being repeated with slow intercooling, followed by surface heating to the hardening temperature and quenching. Spheroidal graphite cast iron may be surface hardened by induction heating six times to 950 DEG C. for periods of 14 seconds each, and slow cooling to 500 DEG C. by compressed air followed by a water quench. The pearlitic surface areas may then be hardened by heating and quenching.
