A lathe comprises a rotatable disc-turret 2 supporting tools 3 engaging the work 5 from below, a rotatable and axially-movable shaft 10, parallel to the lathe spindle S; for supporting the turret, and a support 6 on an arm 7 for supporting the tools against the cutting reaction and guiding them. The arm 7 is rotatable in a slide 28, Fig. 9, movable transversely of spindle S in ways on a member 30 mounted on the machineframe 31 adjacent the front of the spindlehead H. Clamping-rings 32 between the arm and slide are compressed by collars 40, 41, operated by an eccentric 39 on a knob 36 to clamp the arm. The slide is traversed by a shaft 43, Fig. 7, connected to the slide by levers 44, 46, the upper bifurcated end of lever 46 engaging a pin 53, Fig. 11, in a member 49 connected to the slide and slidable in a recess 29<11> in member 30. An adjustable stop 54 limits sliding, and a clamping-gib 48, Fig. 10, in member 30 and operated by an eccentric 56<1>, secures the slide after adjustment. An arm 4, Fig. 2, supports the turret 2 from shaft 10, which is rotatable to swing the tools into engagement with the work and an adjustable turret-stop 6<1> into engagement with the flat underside of guide 6, a shaft 14 indexing the turret. Rotation of shaft 10 is by a lever 27, Fig. 4, on a pivot 26 at one end of a cylinder 20 formed with a track 25 engaged by a roll 24 mounted on the end 10<1> of shaft 10. The ends of the shaft act as pistons, which are loose fits in their respective cylinders 20 and are displaceable by fluid, e.g. oil, under pressure, which may also bias lever 27 into operative position. The angular adjustment of guide 6 permits conical machining. Toolspindles 9 in a holder or turret 8, indexable about an axis 17, are also moved axially by axial movement of shaft 10. The holder 8 is carried by a support 16, through which passes shaft 10, the shaft displacing axially but not rotating the support. Chips fall through an opening in the bed.
