Abstract
1,155,644. Work steadies. WEYBURN ENG. CO. Ltd. 4 Oct., 1967 [20 Oct., 1966], No. 47060/66. Headings B3D and B3T. A work steady for use in lathes and grinding machines of the type in which a workpieee is supported on three circumferentially spaced pads or rollers, one of which is displaceable to permit the insertion and removal of the workpiece characterized in that the rollers 6, 9 and 11 are mounted on pivoted levers 3, 7 and 10, the arm 5 of the lever 3 having means in the form of a screw device 22, 21a for positively moving the roller 6 into contact with the workpiece 24 and holding the arm and roller in this position, all the levers being connected by a system of push rods 13, 20, 21 and levers 16, 14, whereby the movement of lever 3 effects corresponding movements of the levers 7 and 10 so that all the work-supporting rollers move towards or away from the axis of the workpiece by equal amounts. The levers 7 and 10 are pivotably mounted on a common spindle 36 and are clampable on the spindle during a machining operation by fluid means in the form of a cylinder 39 with an annular piston 42, whereby the levers are urged into clamping abutment axially of the spindle 36 against the support frame 1. Pneumatic/hydraulic means 47 is provided to produce the high hydraulic pressure required for the clamping action. The push-rods 13, 20, 21 are slidably mounted in a guide block 29 provided with lubricating passages 32, and the respective rods have screw adjusting means 26, 27, 28 respectively to facilitate initial setting of the lever positions, the displacement of the rollers being initiated from lever 3 via push-rod 13 which simultaneously actuates the levers 7 and 10 via levers 14 and 16 and push rods 20 and 21.
