Abstract

851,166. Foundry ladles. SYLVESTER, E. Q. Feb. 24, 1958 [March 8, 1957; May 27, 1957], No. 5877/58. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] The bottom pouring opening of a ladle 1 is placed in communication with the lower end of a separable upwardly extending refractory pouring conduit 2 disposed externally of the ladle with its upper end in communication with the bottom of a separate mould 15, and metal is caused to flow upwardly into the mould by applying a pressure differential to the molten metal. Compressed gas or inert gas may be supplied to, or exhausted from, the ladle through a valve 8, and the lower end may be provided with a slide valve 13. The upper end of the spout engages a gate structure 16 having a slide plate 17 for closing the opening. In a modification, Fig. 3, the mould gate is actuated by a cylinder 63, and the ladle has an upper, watercooled rim 45 on which the cover 49 seats on a sealing gasket 46. The ladle stopper 50 is held in place by a key 66, Fig. 4, while the ladle is filled and lowered into engagement with the spout structure 55, then the key is pulled out by a wire 67, and a blast of air through the conduit lifts the valve from its seat so that molten metal flows into the conduit, the stopper floating to the surface of the melt. In a further embodiment, the ladle stopper is actuated by a piston. In a further embodiment, a stem depending from the stopper engages the spout when the ladle is lowered thereon, and the stopper is thereby lifted. In another modification, Fig. 13, the ladle is contained in a container 152, to which pressure gas may be supplied through a conduit 154.
