Abstract

1,033,066. Casting-machines. E. Q. SYLVESTER. May 14, 1963 [May 21, 1962], No. 19066/63. Heading B3F. In an apparatus for forcing metal upwardly from a ladle through a pouring tube into a mould positioned on the end of the pouring tube, the top of the pouring tube is initially sealed by a closure member which is disintegrated by the molten metal as it fills the pouring tube. The ladle 20 is mounted in an enclosure 16 beneath a cover assembly 38 through which the pouring tube 14 passes by way of a bellows seal 46. A mould assembly 52 is seated upon the upper end of the tube on an asbestos gasket 74 overlying an aluminium disc 66 which closes the top of the pouring tube. High pressure air may be supplied to a conduit 78, the disc 66 and gasket 74 yielding sufficiently to allow said air to enter the pouring tube and force metal therein back into the ladle. When casting is to be performed, the pressure in the tube is relieved and pressure air is supplied to the enclosure 16 via conduit 88, forcing metal up the tube, to melt the closure 66 and enter the mould. Modifications describe different methods of securing the closure discs and connecting the pressure air supply to conduit 78 to facilitate the assembly of the ladle and the cover 38.
