Abstract

<PICT:0850883/III/1> In a steam condenser 2, e.g. as used for steam turbines 1, and in which the condenser circulating water is cooled by one or more cooling towers 5, the air is extracted by an ejector or pump 10 of the water jet type, the ejector being operated by the pressure of the circulating water. A pump 3 draws water from the tower 5 and passes it through the condenser to a trough 9 from which it passes down the tower 5 and is cooled. Branch connections 11 or 17 pass water to the ejector 10, where a high velocity jet of water is produced to evacuate air from the condenser. The discharge mouth of the ejector is submerged in water in a tank 12 provided with an air vent 13 and a partition 14, the latter forming a weir to maintain a constant level of submergence. Overflow from the weir passes to the tower by line 16 for recirculation.
