Abstract

980,711. Multi-stage evaporators. VERKSPOOR N.V. Nov. 14, 1962 [Nov. 17, 1961], No. 43057/62. Heading BIB. In an evaporator divided by partitions 2 into a number of flash chambers connected in series by channels 4 between the lower ends of the partitions and the bottom of the evaporator, wherein the liquid flows in succession through the chambers which are maintained at decreasing pressures, the upper boundary of each channel is formed by a substantially horizontal plate 3 which is inclined upwardly at the downstream end thereby forming a diffuser to ensure stable flow of the liquid. The other end of the plate is preferably also inclined upwardly. Stability of liquid-flow is further increased by providing, at the bottom of each channel, a transverse rib 7 which causes turbulence and the formation of bubbles. Guideplates 8 are mounted in each chamber to prevent the formation of mist. The vapours pass through openings 12 and are condensed on pipes 9; and the condensate is withdrawn through pipe 13. The apparatus may be used for the distillation of sea water, and also for the evaporation of strongly-foaming solutions.
