A non-inflammable composition for extinguishing magnesium fires contains by weight from 5 to 20% pitch, 10 to 30% polyethylene and 50 to 80% urea. The composition is preferably in the form of a powder passing a number 60 screen with a retention not exceeding 10%. The powder particles may be coated with a water repelling agent.
