Abstract

A high-speed thread advancing and storing roller comprises a rotatable cylindrical cage formed by two sets of interdigitating bars arranged so that the diameter of the cage gradually decreases, and so that one set is stationary while the other is movable both vertically and towards and away from the axis of the cage, with means for introducing a liquid into the cage to contact the thread and means for removing the liquid adjacent the cage; as the cage revolves at high speed and one set of bars moves with respect to the other, the thread is advanced through the cage on the inside thereof in a series of helical turns in a relaxed condition. As shown, the stationary set of bars 10 is integral with a rotatable housing 9 and a ring 19 which supports the movable set of bars 14, each of which has a cam-follower in inclined and eccentric races 15, 16 in a stationary housing 6. Each bar is wider at the bottom than the top so that the internal diameter of the cage gradually decreases.
