Abstract

847,868. Propelling aircraft. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan. 29, 1959 [April 1, 1958], No. 10511/58. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A vertical take-off aircraft has compressors to provide lift. These compressors are driven by turbines, and the turbines are driven by air supplied by an extra compressor in a gas turbine used for forward propulsion; the extra compressor is driven by a free turbine in the gas turbine. Fig. 5 shows the propulsion turbine, which has an extra compressor 41 driven by free turbine 38 and feeding air to a manifold 43. Air for the main compressor passes round the extra compressor. The tail pipe is adjustable and can provide some lift. Fig. 6 shows a lift compressor or fan. Air is supplied by manifolds 21 to a turbine 50 which drives a fan 55. Guide vanes 56, 57 and inlet and outlet flaps 46 and 47 are provided. Fig. 4 shows an aircraft with gas turbines 15, 17 supplying air to compressors 14. Combustion chambers 26, 30 are provided to increase lift. Air may also be supplied to jet flaps 16, or to additional propulsion nozzles 23, 32.
