A pick-up baler has reciprocating elements for feeding material into the baling chamber driven directly from the compressing plunger. The plunger 38 which may be constructed and mounted as described in Specifications 846,395 and 846,396 has a rearward extension 39 which is connected at 41 to a chain 42 running on idler sprockets 43, 44. The sprocket 44 is fixed to a larger sprocket 45 and a chain 52 passes round this sprocket and on idler 53. A carriage 65 is connected to the chain 52 and is arranged to reciprocate on rails 64 above the feed table 55. Mounted beneath the carriage are two pairs of feed forks 72, 73 pivoted so as to engage material on their forward stroke and ride over it as they return. The forks 73 enter the baling chamber with the material. The connection 41 is so arranged that if forward movement of the feed forks be obstructed, a connecting pin will shear, but compressing movement of the piston will still withdraw the forks 73 clear of the baling chamber feed opening due to engagement of a lug on the chain 42, Fig. 7 (not shown), by the extension 39.
