A safety device for a gas cylinder comprises a blind tube 7 of resilient material which is adapted at its open end to fit the inlet 3 of the valve of a gas cylinder and is provided with a slot 9 in communication with the inside of the tube, the resiliency of the tube and the dimension of the slot being such that when an excessive pressure difference is established across the device the deformation of the material causes the lips of the slot to come together to restrict the discharge from the cylinder. In another embodiment the slot is provided at some distance from the bottom of the tube and in a further embodiment the slot is cut in the bottom of the tube in a plane parallel to the axis of the tube. The tube may be provided with a hemispherical bottom.
