Abstract

843,932. Piston valves. TURNBULL, D. E. Feb. 25, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 1626/56. Class 135. In an hydraulic control valve comprising a valve spool having at least three piston lands separated by stem portions and a valve sleeve having supply and exhaust ports of constant area and two control ports at which are produced hydrodynamic reaction forces acting in the same direction on the valve spool, the stem portion adjacent the exhaust port is so thick that the channel between this stem portion and the sleeve is small enough with respect to the control ports when fully open to produce within the sleeve adjacent the exhaust port an hydrodynamic force which substantially compensates the hydrodynamic forces at the control ports. As shown in Fig. 2 the valve spool 10 has piston portions 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d separated by stem portions 10e, 10f, 10g and the sleeve 11 has a supply port 11b exhaust ports 11a, 11c and control ports 11d, 11e. The stem portions 10e, 10g opposite both exhaust ports 11a, 11c are thickened. In a modification, the ports 11a, 11c are supply ports, and the port 11b is an exhaust port. In this case, the central stem portion 10f only is thickened. In a further modification for a single-acting hydraulic actuator, the spool has only three lands and the port 11c is omitted so that the control port 11e serves only for exit of hydraulic fluid and the control port 11d only for entry of such fluid to the valve sleeve. The reduced stem portions in all forms have a diameter at least equal to 80% of the internal diameter of the valve sleeve. The effective circumferential width of the supply, exhaust and control ports, or of each set of such ports is about half the circumference of the inner surface of the valve sleeve. The stem portion 10f opposite the inlet is preferably not thickened. In Fig. 5, the piston portions 10b, 10c are spaced so that the supply control port 11e as shown is open wider than the exhaust control port 11d. This arrangement results in a reduced hydrodynamic reaction forces on the valve due to flow through the control ports at least for small openings thereof. According to the Provisional Specification, the ports 11a, 11b, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be control ports and the ports 11d, 11e supply and exhaust ports respectively.
