Abstract

1,016,727. Valves. A. S. BEECH. Oct. 20, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1963; Aug. 31, 1964], Nos. 43474/63 and 35582/64. Heading F2V. In a spool valve of the kind in which the spool works in a ported sleeve mounted in the valve body, the ports in the sleeve are obtained by providing internal circumferential grooves 14-16 (Fig. 4, not shown), and a flat face 19 which intersects the grooves thereby forming ports 21-23. The flat face serves as a joint face by which the sleeve may be mounted on a flat, similarly ported, joint face provided on the base 25 of a valve body, a gasket 30 being located between the two faces and the sleeve being located by the base and co-operating upper body part 11 in such a way that no direct pressure is exerted on the gasket. The valve of Fig. 2 may control the operation of a double-action power cylinder, the spool 13 being actuated through tappets 41, 43 by solenoids in casings 34 mounted at each end of the body. Tappet 43 has grooves 52, 53 which engage detent balls 50 to define the two positions of the spool. The spool may have a longitudinal bore 63 and the tappets have grooves in their end faces to prevent their making a tight joint on the end of the spool. Thus, when the spool is moved air can pass freely between chambers 66, 67 to prevent sluggishness. In modifications of the solenoid actuation, one solenoid may be replaced by a spring or two solenoids may be provided together with a spring at each end to bias the spool to a central position closing the inlet 16. The embodiment of Fig. 9 (not shown), shows one of a series of valves each of which is actuated by a rocker 87 from a common camshaft, the sleeves 12 being mounted on a machine body 75. The sealing gasket 30 employed in the embodiments of the invention comprises a steel sheet having elongated openings into which proud, initially circular, joint rings 31 of rubber or nylon or the like are provided.
