Abstract
843,359. Aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Aug. 15, 1958 [Sept. 2, 1957], No. 27689/57. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A jet-propulsion engine is mounted on an aircraft wing by a faired strut, wherein is housed all of the engine driven auxiliary units. The wing spars 10 carry a structure 19 enclosed within a fairing 26 and having detachable connections 19a, 19b for a gas turbine engine 13 housed within a nacelle 18. The engine has a readily-disconnected connection to a shaft 32 driving auxiliary units which are housed in the fairing 26 instead of the more usual location within fairing 18. Such auxiliary units comprise a main fuel pump 27, a booster pump 28, an electric motor 29 and a tachometer 30, grouped about and mounted on a gearbox 31 driven by shaft 32. A fuel supply control unit 33, also mounted in the fairing 26, supplies fuel to the engine through a readily-disconnected pipe 34. An engine oil sump 20a is mounted in the front portion of fairing 18 adjacent air intake 18a. In an alternative embodiment, the fairing 18 is dispensed with and the engine casing constitutes the nacelle wall.
