Abstract

924,078. Jet propelled aircraft. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Dec. 22, 1961, No. 46111/61. Class 4. An aircraft has at least two main forward propulsion jet engines, and at least one additional forward propulsion jet engine of substantially greater thrust/weight ratio than the main engines, the arrangement being such that if one main engine fails, the thrust available from the remaining main engine(s) is less than that required for take-off, the necessary additional thrust being available from the additional engine(s). The aircraft of Fig. 1 has three main gas turbine engines, each of 10,000 lb. thrust and thrust to weight ratio of 5: 1. Two engines are installed in pods such as 18 on the fuselage rail, and the third engine 15 is buried in the tail, having an air intake 21 and jet pipe 22. An additional gas turbine engine 23, of 4,000 lb. thrust and thrust/weight ratio of 16: 1, is buried in the tail, having air intake duct 24, intake closure door 25, jet pipe 26, and outlet vanes 27. Any two main engines with engine 23 can thus provide the 24,000 lb. take-off thrust, and any two main engines alone can provide the 18,000 lb. thrust required during cruise. The additional engine may have a bifurcated inlet duct leading from laterally spaced intakes. The aircraft may have two main engines mounted on opposite sides of the fuselage and one additional engine buried in the tail. Provision is made for starting the additional engine by air bled from the compressor of a main engine, and vice versa. The wings are as small as is consistant with satisfactory landing performance, this being assisted by unspecified flap-blowing and boundary layer control devices operated by air bled from the main engines. The additional engine may drive a generator and supply air to cooling units when the aircraft is on the ground or flying at low speed, and may drive a hydraulic pump to provide power operation of the flying controls. All engines may be used for normal take-off, and only the main engines thereafter.
