[Also in Group XVII] A device for forming covers about articles of clothing from tubular plastic film, comprises a platen which presses the film, previously drawn over the article, against fixed members to shape and sever a closed upper end of the cover. The film 122 is drawn from a roller (Fig. 3) over a guide 18 and arranged manually part way over a garment supported on a stand 128. The film passes between a platen 56 (Fig. 9) and sealing and severing members 28, 40. When the platen is pivoted down against the web, the latter is cut transversely and sealed and severed by heated blades along lines corresponding to the shoulders of the garment, a gap 132 (Fig. 11) being left for a garment hanger hook. The cutter consists of a serrated blade 104 (Fig. 9) which is advanced through a slot 59 in the platen by arms 94 carried on the shaft 86 of the platenactuating handles 82 (Fig. 5). The heated blades 48 (Fig. 8) are mounted in holders 42 clamped in the machine frame by screws 38 (Fig. 5). The blades are flanged by resilient guard members 54 which are pressed inwards by pads 63 on the platen. The platen is spring biased to the upper position and is depressed by pulling down one of the handles 82, each handle carrying a roller 80 running in a cam track 78.
