[Also in Group XVII] A machine for facilitating the manual wrapping of an article comprises a table 2 over which wrapping material 16 is drawn by the operator from a roll 7 supported from side bars 8 of the table framework. The material passes over a guide roller 17, under a friction member 18 which prevents retrograde movement, through an opening in a vertical cover plate (not shown) and over a plate 23 formed with a slot 22 embracing a transversely-movable cutter 19, Fig. 3. The latter is mounted in a block 28 carried by an endless chain 26 passing over end sprockets 29 one of which is driven through a reduction gear 30 by an electric motor 31 controlled by a foot-operated switch 6. Depression of the latter energizes the motor to cause the cutter to travel along the upper run of the chain, thus severing a wrapper from the supply, and return to its initial position along the lower run, a projection on the chain then operating a second switch to de-energize the motor. The block 28 also supports a guard 24 having an end portion 25 which depresses the material 16 into the slot 22 to facilitate the cutting operation. The plate 23 may be replaced by a bar having an edge cooperating with the cutter 19. The table 2 may be provided with marks to enable predetermined lengths of material to be drawn from the supply roll, and several supply rolls of different widths may be mounted on the bars 8 so that the operator may select a material suited to the dimensions of the article 32 to be wrapped.
