Abstract
1,164,481. Making bags; cutting webs. IMA S.p.A. 12 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 40582/66. Headings B4B and B5D. [Also in Division B8] A machine for forming, filling and closing tea-bags has an equi-angular 12-arm rotary conveying head 2, Fig. 1 (not shown), which intermittently rotates in steps of 30 degrees to carry part folded bags to a series of operating stations placed circumferentially outside the head at the positions where it is stationary. Bag forming.-A web of filter paper, cut from a reel 72, Fig. 10, is contacted by the front of a mandrel 28 and bent into U-shape around the mandrel sides. The leading end of the mandrel has a groove into which the paper is pressed, Fig. 13 (not shown), to form an end pleat. Transverse benders 126, 127 form the first lateral folds of the bag with consequential forming of flaps 130a by bending wrapper portions 129, 130 above and below the mandrel on to the top and bottom of a stationary member 129a. The bag then passes through a funnel 125 having elements 125a-125c, Fig. 13, to press the folds into V-shaped grooves in the edges of the mandrel. They also fold down the protruding portions to form the bag shown in Fig. 15. The bag is discharged from the mandrel on to a movable support member (34), Fig. 6 (not shown), where it is grasped by the grippers 30 of one of the twelve arms, after which the support retracts and the arm moves successively to stations S2, S3 where pressers (44), (45), Fig. 7 (not shown), act to consolidate the folds. Cutting.-A web of filter paper 99 fed to a bag-forming mandrel 28 in a machine for making and filling tea-bags (see Division B8), is drawn from a reel 72 by a driven roller 82, and braking roller 83. The rollers 82, 83 and a rotating knife 84 are mounted on a vertically reciprocating head 73, and, during part of the upwards movement of the head when the absolute velocity of the web is zero, i.e. downward motion of the web is cancelled by upwards motion of the knife, the knife severs the end portion of the web. Roller 100 mounted on a leaf spring 101 keeps the web tensioned and the relative speeds of the roller 82 and the knife 84 may be varied by interchangeable gears which connect them. To prevent the web from becoming slack, a braking system (113), Fig. 5 (not shown), is mounted on a hub (112) which carries the reel 72. The braking effect caused by a spring-loaded member (113c) pressing against a disc (113d) mounted on the hub (112) is variable manually.
