Abstract

A binder consists of or comprises a preponderent current of (1) a water-insoluble homo-polymer resulting from the polymerization of a compound of formula (I): CH2=CHAROH where A is oxygen or sulphur and R is a straight or branched chain alkylene groups having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or a -(CnH2nA)mCnH2n-groups where n is an integer of value 2 to 4, m an integer 1 to 5 and A as defined above, or (2) a water insoluble copolymer derived from the copolymerization of at least 3% by weight of the compound of formula (I) with up to 97% by weight of one or more monoethylenically unsaturated comonomer. The binder may be prepared by emulsion polymerization of the monomers olefined above either alone or together with other mono-ethylenically unsaturated comonomers. Specified comonomers are those of the formula: <FORM:0842215/IV(a)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or the methyl group and Rx is an alkyl group; also various acrylates and methacrylates, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylamide and methacrylamide. An aminoplast may be dissolved in an aqueous dispersion of the polymer. The dispersion may also contain a catalyst and wetting agent. Examples disclose dispersions containing the following emulsion copolymers:-b -hydroxyethyl vinyl sulphide/butyl acrylate copolymer; b -hydroxyethyl vinyl ether/butyl acrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer; diethylene glycol monovinyl ether/ethyl acrylate copolymer; 5-hydroxy-pentyl vinyl ether/n-butyl acrylate-copolymer; and the following further additions: t-octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, octylphenoxyethoxysodium sulphate, methyl cellulose and silicone antifoam.
