Abstract
841,909. Protective systems for butt-welding machines. RESISTANCE WELDERS Ltd. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33280/57. Class 38 (4). In a welding machine having a transformer whose primary winding 2 is connected in series with a power factor capacitor 6 across supply mains 5, a power absorbing device 7 is connected across a reactive member to draw appreciable current when the voltage increases due to transient surges. The device may be connected across either the transformer primary or secondary windings, a separate high voltage winding, or an autotransformer extension of the primary winding. Alternatively the device may be connected across the capacitor. The device preferably comprises a non-linear resistor, or a gas-discharge tube with a series impedance, or a linear or non-linear resistor in series with a magnetic amplifier which is controlled by the voltage across the reactive member. The power absorbing device should be preferably non-reactive.
