Abstract

840,351. Preventing furnace corrosion; carbon monoxide containing gas. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. July 21, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957; Jan. 23, 1958], Nos. 25897/57 and 2301/58. Classes 51 (1) and 55 (2). The durpoint of the gaseous combustion products in an oil-fired furnace is raised and the harmful effects of sulphur trioxide avoided by replacing part of the fuel burned by a reducing gas. Sufficient reducing gas, which may be carbon monoxide or a gas containing carbon monoxide, is injected into the combustion zone of the furnace to burn with substantially all the excess air. The injected gas may be produced by introducing part of the fuel oil together with primary air into the burner 3 of a gasifier 2 enclosed in an outer casing 1. Secondary air passes into the casing and thence through ports 5 into the combustion chamber 2, and a mixture of carbon monoxide and other gases from exhaust 6 is fed into the combustion zone of the main furnace. The proportion of fuel oil gasified is not greater than the amount required to burn with the excess air present in the main furnace.
