Abstract

827,368. Gasifying coal underground. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Jan. 8, 1957 [Jan. 11, 1956], No. 1023/56. Class 55 (2). In a system for gasifying coal underground, the reaction in a blind borehole 4 extending from a shaft 3 is initiated by passing a stream of air and/or inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or engine exhaust gases, from the shaft into a pipe 6 extending into the borehole and containing an electric heating element 15 5 until the temperature indicated by a thermocouple 17 is sufficiently high for ignition of the coal, inert gas or air being then added to the stream, depending on whether air or an inert gas was used in the first place to control the temperature at about 800‹ C. until the reaction is established, when the supply of air can be increased and the inert gas cut off. In a modification the heating element 15 may be replaced by a burner burning a fluid fuel, e.g. propane, in a stream of oxygen-containing gas supplied through the pipe 6.
