Abstract

838,611. Making turbine rotor discs; forging. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. July 14, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 23614/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of upsetting a metal billet, particularly for forming a turbine rotor disc, by applying axial pressure to the billet 1 within a cylindrical cavity 3 to deform it radially into a die cavity 4, the pressure is first applied to the central portion of the billet and then the remainder is upset to its required shape. This is stated to produce better grain structure in the centre of the rotor disc. A cylindrical billet of a creep-resisting nickel-chrome alloy is first pierced and partially upset by a ram 5 and then it is upset to final shape by an annular ram 6.
