Abstract
562,727. Making bomb &c. casings. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., KELLEY, G. L., and DAVENPORT, S. March 26, 1943, No. 4929. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Cases for bombs and other projectiles of metal, such as mild steel, having integrally formed nose, body and base ends, are produced by an alternate series of cupping and forging operations from a disc. As illustrated, four cupping operations and four nose forging operations are described, resulting, after trimming the open end to length, in the blank, Fig. 9, with a'nose 8 tapering from the end down to the thickness of the body. The blank is then forced, into a die, Fig. 14, by a punch 11 formed to fit the nose, to reduce the open end and partly close it by flanging. This operation is performed in two stages ready for the attaching, as by bolting, of a' base-plate 12, Fig. 17, welded to a tapped bush 13 that serves as a filling opening and is finally closed by.a screwed plug. The base-plate also carries brackets 14 for the attachment of tail fins. The operations are preferably performed cold with annealing operations as required, for example, after each pair of cupping and forging operations. The body does not require machining except to receive the nose cap but is preferably coated inside with shellac.
