836,594. Soldering. BIRFIELD TOOLS & DESIGNS Ltd., [formerly TOOLMAKERS & DESIGNS (COVENTRY) Ltd.], and LANCASTER (LONDON) Ltd., G. K. Sept. 11, 1957 [Juno 15, 1956], No. 18501/56. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for removing the soldered-on closure member from a metal container has a frame in which the container is located, heating means to be brought adjacent to or in contact with the soldered joint and means incorporated in the holding frame to lift the container from the closure member when the solder melts. A bed 5 has guides in which are slidable four blocks 6-9 each having a pin 16 passing through a slot in the bed with a roller 18 engaging a slot 11 in a cam 10 rotatable by a hand wheel 15 through a worm and a wheel 12. Slides 19-22 are mounted on the blocks and are adjustable on the blocks by screws 23-26 fixed relatively to the blocks and passing through nuts 27 on the slides. The screws each have a sprocket-wheel mounted on its outer end, these wheels being connected by chains 40, 41 to sprocket-wheels on shafts 34-37, the shafts 34, 35 having sliding pin-and-slot connection with the ends of opposed shafts 32 and the shafts 36, 37 having similar connection with the ends of shafts 33. Hand wheels 28, 29 are mounted on the screws 24, 26 to effect adjustment of the slides on the blocks. To urge the rollers 18 against the cam slots springs 45 are provided between blocks 43 in which the screws are slidable and collars on the screws. On the slides 19-22 are mounted laterally-adjustable frame members 46-49 each carrying spring- mounted electric heaters 51, the members 48, 49 additionally carrying slide members 54, 55 downwardly inclined to overhang the members 48, 49 and spring-urged forwards. In operation with the frame members adjusted by moving the slides 19-22 by turning the hand wheels 28, 29, a metal container 57, e.g. for telephone radar or electronic apparatus having a soldered-on closure 58 is located with its edge 60 on a stepped part 61 of the slide members 54, 55. The hand wheel 15 is then rotated to rotate the cam and move the blocks 6-9 and hence the members 46-49 forwards so that the switchedon heaters engage the soldered seam, lips 58 being provided on the heater casings to engage the seam 58. The members 54, 55 on the inward movements of the frame members 48, 49 move along their inclined slideways and so lift the container away from its closure member. According to the Provisional Specification the closure member is lifted from the container.
